I had created the little gingerbread house to use for the new book cover for my short stories and Jeremy took some great photos, but the photos weren’t the right size so we had to re-shoot. It took a few weeks to schedule the second shooting, so I had time to redesign the house to be a little more elaborate. Jeremy suggested a cellar door.
Because the pieces were larger, or perhaps because they weren’t as thin, I got some warpage when the cookies were baked. This meant gaps at the roof line, which I patched with candy. A friend, watching me, asked “Are you weatherproofing your gingerbread house?” It did look like that, spackling the gaps with frosting.
I had originally tried to use a jacquard bottle, but the bottle was so hard to fill that I got a giant plastic syringe and filled that first. After a while, I realized that the jacquard tips fit perfectly onto the syringe, and I ended up using just the syringe to apply the frosting.
