I really liked this book. I’d enjoyed the first one years and years ago, and bought this because it was on sale at audible.
Davy has the ability to teleport, an ability that is only thwarted if he’s physically chained to something. Naturally, early on, he gets kidnapped and physically chained to a wall, and then finds out that the bad guys have done something even worse to imprison him. The story alternates between his imprisonment and torture, and his wife’s attempts to find him.
It will probably help your understanding of this book if you realize that, at heart, it’s a superhero novel. Davy has supernatural powers that let him do things other people can’t do, and as a result, he attracts the notice of desperately evil villians. But he’s also supremely good. He gives money to orphans, he befriends crazy homeless people, he refuses to kill people even if it means he himself is in danger.
Millie has a similar disposition. She goes out of her way to help strangers, even when it puts herself in danger, behavior that is perhaps foolish in real life but heroic in literature. She and Davy are also brilliant, outwitting both the NSA, the FBI, and the shadowy Illuminati-like organization that is pulling the strings.
This book is like an action movie, except with more female characters and fewer senseless murders. The action careens from problem to double-crossing to leaks to plot twists to scene changes delightfully. I really enjoyed listening to it, and found myself looking for audio-book opportunities where I normally would have enjoyed silence.
If you want an action thriller novel with supernatural elements, this book is best in class. It’s entertaining, and inspired me to buy the next in the series.
